Born in Tunis to a modest Jewish family, lawyer Gisèle Halimi spent her life challenging gender norms. She began her legal career by defending independence activists and denouncing the French army’s torture of Algerians.

Alongside Simone de Beauvoir and through highly publicized trials, she later played a key role in legalizing abortion (1975) and redefining rape as a crime rather than a misdemeanor (1980).
